FLOWING NATURE
The masterplan for a mixed-use development Comprising 12,000 homes, accommodating around 40,000 residents, is strategically situated along the breathtaking Niagara Falls in Canada. This innovative design prioritizes open spaces by creating a central linear park, envisioned as a “necklace” of themed pocket parks catering to various programs and activities. These include a sports park, community gathering areas, and a cultural park, all seamlessly leading to a vibrant civic plaza adjacent to the existing Niagara Falls Train Station. This plaza will be the town center, featuring cafés, restaurants, and shops that promote community interaction and economic vitality.
The design utilizes a perimeter block typology for buildings, which envelops semi-private communal courtyards, fostering a sense of community while ensuring safety and accessibility. The landscape integrates a sustainable urban drainage system, effectively managing rainfall while enhancing biodiversity and ecological resilience.
Traffic flow is meticulously planned to prioritize pedestrians and cyclists, ensuring easy connectivity throughout the development while allowing for efficient servicing and parking access via a perimeter road. Ground-level spaces are curated to facilitate active frontages and stimulate dynamic footfall, enhancing vibrancy.
The construction approach incorporates a hybrid of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and low-carbon concrete, emphasizing sustainability and flexibility. This modular design not only reduces carbon footprints but also adapts to the evolving needs of the community.
